1691 plus 3 brahma chicks! Just hatched - they are whoppers! Athos, porthos, Aramis - the three musketeers! If a pekin hatches soon he can be called d'artagnan a musketeer wannabee..........1694 plus or minus the other 2 posts -( i can't be adding/minusing other peoples I can just about cope with my own!!)
1713 minus 3 = 1710
Aramis died, d'artagnan was a case of counting your chickens before they have hatched(successfully!) and we lost the first chicken we ever bought today - Bec the evil but funny black rock, she had a prolapse so had to be put down. Kids will be upset when they get back from school......
My lovely barred Plymouth Rock Penny, who used to lay me the biggest eggs you've ever seen, succumbed to the severe cold and died after a short illness. Bye bye Penny...

How sad
It's been minus 12 Celsius here every night for over 3 weeks now, and not gone above minus 5 during the day. The hens drinkers have frozen solid over night and I've had to change the water twice a day, but the hens have just snuggled up together and are fine.
They weren't too keen on going out into the snow, and preferred to look at the snow through a window.
Today there's a lot of grass showing through what is left of the snow, so they've been outside to see if any worms have been brave enough to venture above ground.
Lost another just after Christmas ... became really poorly very quickly, had lost weight, crop empty. Couldn't really tell what was going on but because of the snow and ice couldn't get her to the vet, so took the decision to put her out of her misery ourselves
