    • Awww ((((HUGS)))) Petal! Normally they keep themselves warm enough. It's minus another Batty here, too. Stiff as a board when I went in this morning.

      Takes us down to 2346.

      • Oh dear - hugs to Petal and G4. I worry about my girls on the allotment as both coops are in a frost pocket.

        • -1 of mine = 2345

Not sure if this was the weather or not, but she was under the perch when I found her. They've moulted and she'd not got much feather back yet. The others seem fine though, a little bare breasted but they've mostly got covered up again.

I could do to move the coop to a more sheltered spot but everything is frozen solid, nothing will budge. I'll just have to keep topping them up with straw and making sure they're all shut up at night.

another white silkie died today, 13 weeks old, perfectly fit and healthy until this weather hit us. Got the rest in barn under heat lamp, antibiotics in water, boiled duck eggs mashed, don't know what else to do.

              • 2344 - 1 = 2343, one of my faves, a mille fleur d'uccle, poorly for a fortnight and went this afternoon. Absolutely skin and bone (350g), under the vet but he seemed pretty stumped too. I'm well fed up.

                  • Now 2341. 2 of my Croad boys are now oven-ready. 1 weighs 6.5lbs and the other 7lbs (that's dressed weight!) Not bad for 8 month old birds I think Still got 2 more to do - but not just yet, I'll wait until there's more room in the freezer
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

                    • Just for interest, the mille fleur d'uccle had a 'generalised bacterial infection', probably exacerbated by stress, according to the vet. Boo.

                      • 2340 - took Barley to the vet because of a swollen crop. She also had a growth in her abdomen so the vet did the decent thing. He was very kind and let me hold her and it took a long time because her circulation was slow, but it was very peaceful and she was calm throughout. RIP Barley, one of my starter trio and my fave chook. (Don't tell the others.)

                          • RIP Ruby - a growth on her liver. Very sad looking chicken on Wednesday. Took her to the vet but brought home an empty box. 2335
