  • 2358 minus two young shiny Pekins (one lavender with a dark head shading to a lighter body and one greenish/black mottled white - pretty birds) off with their new owner = 2356.

    • Hi G4,
thanks for commiserations - some lil' birds jus' don't seem to make it. This one's been a tiny bit poorly for ages, but without any obvious symptoms if you know what I mean?...Luckily, her remaining sibs are fine and lively, so hopefully no worries there!

My second Cream Legbar succumbed to the Mareks paralysis which carried off her sister in August. Confirmed by vet so PTS this morning.

          • Oh no Sue, what a shame. Sorry to hear it.
BTW Keep a close eye on your silkies as they are rather more prone to Mareks than other breeds.

            • +3 here = 2363, not sure as to sex but 2 Orpington and one Buff Pekin. I think they are bantams but again not certain.

              • Non-bantam Orpingtons are ENORMOUS! I don't think you would be in any doubt.

                • How long do they take to reach full size? These are not very old - around 12 weeks I would say

                  • 2363 plus 3 casualties this week, i'm afraid. 1 a silkie that got that water on the brain thing that they are prone to, 1 frizzle pekin that got its head trapped in the shed door as I was fixing it(oops) 1 mixed breed young cockerel that got stuck down the back of some shelving outside and froze to death. God I sound negligent...

Yes the vet mentioned it today Sally. I think I'd read it somewhere but forgotten. Maybe I won't get any more Silkies!

                      • In a bit less than 2 years since the thread was started, those fortunate enough to be keeping poultry have counted comfortably over 2000 (apart from those which got counted, and then subtracted because they were no longer 'vine owned', for whatever reason). I call that a goodly number!
