2598 minus 3 silkie girls off to their new home= 2595. we have just 1 silkie left now, as a broody- it takes too long to sex them effectively and it means a mass dispatch of males at 12 weeks as you can't eat them and it doesn't fit in with my beliefs.

Minus a Battie, here, I'm sad to say.
She was eating corn with the others last night, and stiff as a board this morning. Must have been ailing for a while, as I don't think she weighs more than an empty coffee mug!

I'm feeling all sad for you all now 3 rhode island red/isa brown cross cooks (pol) 2593.
And very soon a random rooster to help protect the gels, from Evil Kitty and the other cat. 2594Ali

Chooks will happily take on a Cat, Feral - Mine aren't even scared of a big bouncing blond 2 year old Golden Retriever with no brain! They just flap and squawk at him, and he bounces off. The neighbourhood Cats give 'em a wide berth too - they don't like being pecked! All the best - Glutton 4 Punishment

Trouble is G4 that Evil Kitty and Real K are used to keeping the rabbit population down just a bit, and when I thought about the size of the rabbits they manage to subdue I got a bit worried. A friend has a 'spare' rooster so will give him a try - she remarked he's 'expendable' so would be good to try the cats with! Just hope he doesn't give the 'gels' too much trouble.Ali

We'll be getting 3 more in about 4 weeks. If he's too energetic he'll get locked up while they are enjoying the sunshine, or he'll make someone else some nice chicken soup.......Ali

2594 it is with rooster in his own henhouse for the min, and he's not happy about it! I think I'll let him out on the w/e and see if he behaves himself! If he has no manners he can go back into this section till we have some more!Ali

2594 + the 7 hens and 1 cockerel I "inherited" with the new house. No idea what kind they are except mostly old! One bantom, one with a wonky tail (guess what she's called!) - and doing a fine job of tilthing the weed ridden, soggy, clay veg patch. Dealing with 6 years of garden neglect - shame its not illegal!
So, 2601 chooks....If the river hasn't reached the top of your step, DON'T PANIC!
