Do you have special quarters for the chicks or are they dining table brats?

They spend their first 3 weeks in a converted indoor guinea pig cage being mollycoddled in the kitchen(ironically where some of them will end up!) picked up by various children and thoroughly thriving on all the attention. at 4 weeks we have a luxury large enclosure with 2 heat lamps, lots of 'toys'(plus big twigs and dried leaves to fight over!) in the barn. when they are fully feathered they then go into another pen with less heat but still sheltered until they are 20 weeks, then a decision can be made over keepers(layers or good examples of a pure breed- or fatten for freezer! (obviously the pekins are all pets- they are full of character!We may rehome male ones if we get too many, though, I want to keep a lavender boy, splash boy.) We are having great fun with this venture but are being realistic at the same time. by the way another chick has hatched, my friends maran cross - how many is that now?1496?

went to penkrudge auction today to "research" prices. An Indian Game Hen (LF) "accidentally" fell into the boot of my car.......... so that brings us to 1507, plus I am going to collect some ex-batts tonight for rehoming, same place Maureen went, so possibly bringing back another 15, but will have to confirm numbers as i might be only lodging a few for others to collect from me, so total now definately stands at 1507

Ok confession time!

I sold 5 chooks, have hatched 5 under hen and 10 in under the lamp (including Doras 3 babies), and came home from the sale with 16 chooks plus 2 came home from my freinds!

Except boss roo my beautiful copper Black Marans cockeral (from my very first hatch November last year) dropped dead spontaneously a few weeks back! so
