  • i think he might be a her :D

i've been in touch with the bloke i got the eggs off, to ask about the breeding of the babies, he said the black ones will be blue, cuckoo or copper marans, or black sussex ....... soooooo as pingu came out of a marans egg, and kinda looks like a white sussex but black with white bits of feathers on the neck, so think she's might be a black sussex cross maran of some sort ..... so think we got that sorted

so the other 3 are various marans crossed with summat

and phoenix may be a cream legbar, crossed with something small,

no idea about buttercup though lol

anyway, i think pingu might actually be a girl, in the last few days, coco and butterup (as well as their massive legs) have started growing huge combs, compared to the other 4, and they are much more red now ...... those 2 are also much bigger, and still haven't got all their feathers, though the other 4 have nearly all theirs, sooooooo it's looking much more hopeful now, oh and pingu has taught elvira that sitting on top of the playpen is fun today too (and they get extra mealworms)

yeah, i think coco and buttercup are definitely boys, they are so much more chunky, though me knowing nowt about sexing chooks, i could be totally wrong lol, but their legs are about 3 times as thick as the others, and their combs at least twice the size

If it says chookchookbok its a girlie, and if it cockadoodledoos its a boy. (sorry, can't help it, thats how I would sex them anyway)

Got a Lavender Aracuna the other year, they told me it was a girl, and then it started crowing the next day! Thankfully breeder was local and let me swap for a girl.

unfortunately they all still say cheep cheep yet, though one of them made a decidedly grown up chockcheep yesterday

So are the boys for the chop at 20 weeks then? How many weeks is it anyway?

I think kirsty b has it right as regards sexing, plus I think boys tend to strut around more to try and impress the girlies

Really hope Pingu is a girl Lynda, making 2 of the hatch into dinner doesn't sound quite so bad then

I think the laying of an egg would be the most certain pointer to sex. (You can tell I know nothing about it can't you?)

they are only 5 weeks yet ..... and fingers crossed they might both have homes (pingu definitely has if he is a boy) , i really don't think i could eat them, definitely next time it will be babies that all look the same, no names, and not living in the living room lol.
