  • Ok- here are a few more of the chick ( there's nothing happening with the other 2 eggs- but I'm not confident about their hatch date- nor if they got too cold.) Next batch are Betty's next weekend

Have a look at the chicks wing feathers- second row have appeared in a cuple of days!

Also- anyone able to sex it- it has a spot on it's head and one sort of between it's shoulders if that's anything to go by???

they all have big feet lol .... takes em a while to work out what they are for, sorry nicos, no clues yet as to the sex, the boys do have thicker legs than the girls in general, but that's not much help when you only have one is it

        • I suspect it may be a little boy, but hope to be wrong on that one.

The spots could be relevent if we were sure of the breed (though I may have missed a post or two?) but otherwise unfortunately probably not

Give us a chance <g> how about a front-on picture (so we can see babies comb)?

They are so cute at that age it seems almost impossible they grow into little teen-chooks... mine have been playing in - out -in -out with their box in the back kitchen today, am waiting to transfer them to outdoor (heated) accomodation as they are getting rather boisterous for the house!

              • Hopefully this is clear enough to see where the comb is/would be!

                It's 8 days old today!

Also- it's a Cayenne bantam- crossed with something French!

When I Googled cayenne chicken all I came up with was a bunch of recipes

Fingers crossed for you that she's a girlie!(this is why I think we won't be trying hatching....I'd find it tough....but I know the kiddies would be devastated if they watched a gorgeous little thing like that grow up to be Sunday dinner!)

with my chicks (though some have been completely wrong) baby's combs have a subtle difference girls to boys (in partnership with shape of head) not that I could put my finger on the difference exactly.....

the stance of chicks can be a clue too - and baby doesn't appear to have a very upright stance another hint its a girl... but really especially with being unfamiliar with the breed its a guess....

                            • My real softie husband says that when he retires he fancies getting some day olds - of a type where they can be sexed at birth. He'd like some chicks to grow up with us but also hates the idea of dispatching the chaps.
