  • I'll try anything...

In a bid to cheer my manic depressive girls up I decided to give their run a bit of a revamp today. I have been at it ALL day...but can finally say it's finished. It doesn't look like there would be much work involved, but I had to clear away all their old flooring before I could lay the new....and the perches, and the holes for the bush...and the hole for the tree trunk, and the dust bath...etc etc etc....

The girls enjoyed free ranging whilst I worked - often popping in to help me when I was hole digging.

They're back inside now - and appear to be enjoying themselves...so I'm happy.

Here's hoping that they'll cheer up a bit, and maybe...just maybe...lay me a wee egg?!?!

Ps: The reason they are always in that far left hand corner is that their mirror is hanging there, and they are sooooo vain it's frightening - obsessed with the thing!!!

That looks so good - I could move in there myself. I wouldn't be in the queue for the mirror these days though!

If you were closer I'd happily do yours Kirsty....I must say I enjoy chicken run design. Maybe that's my calling! lol

Nicos, I haven't got a wooden egg...can't find any local (just websites and the postage is CRAZY money for an egg), but I'm going to put a couple of golf balls in their nest box. Should do the trick, eh?

looks incredible... no wonder there's no eggs, they feel like they're on vacation and that mirror is just absorbing to much of their time!
On a serious note, you've done a cracking job! Fingers crossed that they'll treat you soon to some yummy eggs

Don't leave any golf clubs in the run Bephlam or the girls will be practicing their shots. (or whatever golfers call it)

WOW Beph your girls are well spoilt, they should darn well bless their cotton socks and lay you loads.

My girls have a marble egg - it's a paperweight that I've had for years - daft if you ask me weighting paper with sommat that rolls

I wonder if it's possible to spoil them too much? Battery hens certainly don't get spoilt in the first year of their life yet lay nearly every day. Having said that my family and friends all say my girls are spoilt rotten and they haven't stopped laying all winter. Everyone laughs at me nowadays and says the only language I speak is chickenese. ('cos I luv em so much I talk about them all the time)

                          Those lucky girls!Looks great
Try not to worry that it's anything you're doing wrong why they're not laying....I know we often say"oooh they must be happy, they're laying well"...but as Frias just pointed out battery hens lay well & that's certainly nowt to do with how well they're treated....yours will start soon...maybe the breed or maybe the season....or maybe they're just downright bl00dy stuborn....whatever other reason it's deffo not cos you're not giving them the bestest life possible!....now stop putting the rest of us to shame!!...there I was thinking what a lovely mummy I was today chucking a few rolls of turf in for my girlies!

Yeah, I'm not holding up much hope for the greens...but it's an old heather from the garden, that despite attempts they've not managed to destroy outside the pen...so we'll see!
