I scramble any suspect eggs, mix with pellets and feed back to chooks. One minute in microwave and it's much easier than peeling off those shells.

I watched a Poirot the other day where the lady was writng the dates on the eggs. That sounds like a good, idea, then you won't get mixed up in your experiment. Even though I don't have chooks, I'll be interested to hear the outcome
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

have you tried putting the eggs straight into very cold water after boiling?? it's supposed to help them peel.

It does help a bit but very fresh eggs don't have any air in them. Old eggs have air inside so eggs are easier to peel.

I always wondered the reason - now I know! Thank you Frias!

Now I noticed they are difficult to peel. I write the date on mine in pencil, but to be honest, I don't think I've eaten one older than about three days since I've had my girls.

If I get a damaged one (before the little bu**ers eat it) I beat it up and give it to the cat - she loves them. Can't give raw eggs to the dog now, not with his dodgy stomach.

Depends how they are stored. At 'cool room temperature', 3 days may be enough (that was the age my Mum always reckoned on) but if they are 'fridge cold' it may be longer.
It isn't just the airspace, the texture of the white changes too (hence the 'sitting up' if cracked into a saucer).

I've boiled 4 day old eggs and they're still a b*****r to peel tidily. yes, they have to go into an egg mayo sandwich

When you buy them in the supermarket they are probably at least a week old.

I have been known to keep eggs for 3 weeks so that I can hardboil and pickle them.

Hmmmm. Pickeld eggs! I love them. Himself hates them - and the associated aroma from me!

Aren't pickled eggs a 'Man' thing?

                            With a bag of crisps?

Mind you, I don't see the attraction of pickled Walnuts either.

Perhaps I need to try them... ?

I always plunge hard boiled eggs into cold water as it stops the yolk creating a dark ring around the outside against the white. I have two that I am keeping in the back of the fridge to make sure they don't get eaten. and a note to hard boil them next Thursday. I will then increase or decrease by single days accordingly to see when the optimum time is - serious stuff this
