Chooks in the snow

Have you got snow there today and how are your chickens coping with it?

There's a fair covering in the garden today and the girls aren't happy. It was funny to watch when I opened the pop-hole this morning though, the usual mad dash to get out then stopping suddenly and causing a pile-up of chooks halfway down the ramp Some of them have come out, Marigold (Black Star) looked as if she was doing some sort of new dance tentatively touching the ground with 1 foot before putting it down properly and doing the same with the other! I'm thinking about putting a feed tray and water bucket inside the coop for them today, but all 13 of them won't be able to get to it at the same time. Hmmmmmmmmm why didn't I think about this eventuality before I made the coop

Just had a maybe bright idea .......................... I'll open up the old coop as a cafe for them then if they spill the water it won't go onto any of the bedding. Yes, good thinking Batman.

Sorry for rambling on, I find it easier to solve problems when I'm writing them down. Just going to do that now

mine dont like it they came out the run and were up to their necks in it, so I had to carry them back in.

My bantams wont go near the snow! First time they've seen it.They have a cover on the run so its not too bad in there.Shoved some food in for them.

I've now put the feeding trough and a bucket of water inside the old coop, poured some hot water into the outside water bucket, and put a washing-up bowl with food in under the hedge where they all go to shelter when it rains. For some reason the girls don't want to go into the nest boxes this morning, just looked in the big coop and there's 3 of them laying their eggs in the bedding on the floor!

My girls don't seem to mind too much but then we only have a light dusting so far. They are however as we speak enjoying a nice hot bowl of porridge and cauli leaves, YUM!

Still no snow here , and I suspect we won't get any either... (more). I'd love to see what my girls would do about it - they're all a bit nutty, so would probably charge about in it!

I'm feeling a very bad mum to them today actually, as I brought the battery from their leccy fence home last night to give it a bit of a boost up, and forgot to put it on charge. B****r. So they are confined to their eglu run all day, and won't be at all happy about it. Sorry girls!

I've been a softy (not like me at all) and I brought the guinea pigs indoors last night as it was howling a gale and all blizzardy like.
They've been confined to quarters for weeks now with all the rain, and are thoroughly miserable. So I've let them indoors to have a chew on Mr Shed's furniture

I have one set of tracks round the run where someone came out, had a wade through (we have loads!) and then straight back in! They have food and water in their house now. They keep looking out in disgust and eating snow

i think i may take the babies out in it for a bit, just to see what they do, i shall take piccies

Mine did much the same as Maureen's, but came out eventually when I swept the snow of the ramp, which may have had something to do with me wafting a bit of cheese into the pop hole. Their whole run is covered, but it had still drifted onto it.

I'm really wibbling now, though, someone said it's still below freezing out there, which means their water will have frozen, even though it's got cider vinegar in it. I'm at work and there's no neighbours around today to put fresh out - do you reckon they'll eat snow instead?

Hashette - If it's any consolation I've just been to the lottie to check on my girls and its -1 there and their water was fine. It is under cover but not very much and we've had a good bit of snow. The chooks won't come out from their covered run and who shall blame them!

My lot were delighted - snow or not nothing stops them - they've been a source of amusement to the nags who are stuck inside, blizzards at present. They had a treat last night of a couple of raw lamb shoulder bones as I made hotpot, it was very funny watching one of the chooks run around with a bone in her mouth. They've got all the raw lamb trimmings tonight so they'll be very happy chooks.

Half of my run is covered with tarp and that has kept the worst off. The other half is snowy, and they have investigated it, but seem thoroughly unimpressed.

Gave them hot grub this morning, and the little darlings saw fit to lay me 4 eggs despite the weather.

too cold, they didn't want to come out of the cat basket, but got a few short videos don't think they liked it much, definitely preferred hiding under the table

I put a corn on the cob in a water dish when they peck it it turns keeping some access to the water - handy if you have one anyway..............
