Day three in the Snadger hoose.......

Spose I've got to spill the beans sometime!

I'm having another go at hatching chickens. At 7.00am on 6th Feb I placed 6 eBay purchsed Light Sussex eggs and 6 X Salmon Faverolles eggs into my recently aquired incubator.
After failing with my broody chook last year, I've decided not to build my hopes up and if they hatch great, if they don't 'so be it'!

Both breeds are both good for eating and egg laying so I'm not too bothered if they hatch cockerels or hens.
After chicks are born two days I should be able to tell what sex the Faverolles are by the colour of there wing tips. Haven't read up on the LS yet so not sure how and when I will be able to tell.

Hope by telling you lot I haven't put the kybosh on things!

If they do hatch OK, and if the Faverolles are gender-specific at an early stage, you should be able to sort out the 'tail feather' thing at a similar age, and use that for the LS. Hens only grow straight tail feathers, so they grow them early. Cockerels wait a few days longer to grow any tail at all.... (that is what I was told, and the few I used the method for, it was right, but that WAS rather a long time ago, so I can't recall exactly HOW old the sign works).

Ha! Knew you'd fess up eventually. I saw about them on Poultry Chat - You have a different user name - so do I - but I did some detectoring!

Good luck with this lot - you should get some out from them. They're both nice breeds too.

the tail thing does work a bit, till you get one that doesn't fit ....... though i reckon if they are all the same breeds it would be easier ..... the jury is still out on elvira, cos she has sticky up tail feathers ....... the legs are a good indicator, way before anything else, the boys legs are a lot thicker than the girls

Blazes,foiled again!!! I was a bit embarrassed about getting my hopes up and everyone elses last time with my broody so was going to keep quiet.............Fat chance, with a mouth like mine!
