perch for chick

When do you think the little un ( now almost 3 weeks old) will stop sharing the nest box with mum at night and start sleeping on a perch??

You see it's something else to go wrong!!! Mum might decide to join the others and leave the bebe on its own...will it be ok on its own with no siblings to cuddle up to???

Also- what size of perch will it cope with- surely it's little feet can't cope with a 1 1/2 " perch...so...urm- what would you do???

I'm sure someone who's had babies before (well I have, of course, but not feathery ones) will know. The truth is out there!

i used a broom handle to start with, they managed fine, then they moved onto a cardboard tube from the middle of some wrapping paper, and now they are on proper perches

don't think the mums will leave them for quite a while yet though, but then i've never had a mummy chook lol

Just wondering if I should put something up for it- cos it's balancing on the cardboard barrier I've put up to stop the chicks from falling/climbing out!

It's flying well too- managed an 18" jump up today!!!
Still nipping at it's toes though!

Broom handle sounds good- got one of those!

mine did that, i used a couple of kitchen roll inners inside each other, stuck on to the box with gaffer tape that worked ok too, till they ripped it off that took a couple of weeks though, by which time they were perching on proper perches.

Mum won't leave the chicks until they are old enough to look after themselves - anything from 4 weeks onwards. Granted, a 4-week old chick is still very wee but they are resillient little blighters! Mum knows best and I've had chicks perching on adult perches from that age too.

Just found a little ladder and it's jumping up each step...clever little thing!
