  • We have our first egg!

After waiting almost 4 weeks we finally have our first egg
Will post photo later when I have time. Its a good size, weighing 62g and we think it was Ginny that laid it--in the middle of the floor, not in the nest box!. Hopefully the other three will get the idea soon!

    Hooray!

So will it be boiled? fried? scrambled? poached? omelette? or go into a cake? Whatever you do with it it'll be the best egg you've ever tasted
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

And we've had two more today, so they're obviously getting the hang of it. We have had an omlette, yummy!

Any suggestions for getting them to use the nest boxes rather than the middle of the floor of the house?

My ex-Bats laid their eggs all over the place until I got the ex-free rangers, who were obviously used to a nest-box. Now they all lay in the correct place (unless it's full lol!). Suggest you get more hens?

I only had 2 eggs in the run, now they're always in the nest.... HOwever, there seems to be only 1 girl laying at the mo. Everyday at lunchtime there's a beautiful egg waiting in the nest - bless them

As we all know chickens are fickle - so when I have a few who start laying on the floor or where they shouldn’t I cram the nesting boxes with straw as if blocking it off to them within 20 minutes they will have carefully deconstructed the straw into a tight nesting box happy in the thought I didn't want them in there -hey presto no more stray eggs - sometimes they only leave enough space to get half their body in - but must feel safe like that? Good old reverse psychology!

                            Regards and good luck

You could try a pot egg (from agricultural stores who sell chook stuff) in the nest boxes if they continue but as everyone has said nature takes over and they want to lay in a quiet dark place ie the nest box. Occasionally some of mine lay in the run but in a corner where the straw has piled up and sometimes a second hen will push the first egg out on to the hut floor so she has a clear box!
