We've thought about keeping turkeys... originally OH wanted males and females, but you have to have at least a 1:5 ratio, as turkey boys can do a lot of damage to turkey girls!

We're still considering it actually..... the Practical Poultry forum has quite a few experience turkey owners/breeders, and there are several thread on "Turkeys - are they difficult to keep" type of thing...

I kept a trio of turkeys for some years, and a neighbour who bought a trio from me (from the bought-in hatching eggs my own ones came from) had his trio for at least 5 years with no trouble (probably longer, for all I know he may still have them, but we moved away 8 years ago). They WERE free ranging except when the weather was bad. I kept Norfolk Blacks, because I didn't want enormous things, those were quite big enough for the local demand (including our own Christmas Dinner).
I am severely unconvinced that these gadgets are a kind way of killing a turkey, and having picked up turkeys, adult chickens, and young chickens, by their feet, I can confidently state that young chooks are MUCH more bothered, especially if tame, and turkeys hardly notice (but then they haven't got enough brain to notice much, there are few creatures less intelligent than a turkey.... worms maybe....)

The rest of you - you're all mad...and as bad as each other!

            Bless you Bephlam!
