OK- so it's nice and sunny here today.
I've just been giving the boys a mite talcing and a little cuddle- and noticed how warm their combs and wattles are.

...urm....and here's the question.....might they get sunburn in the summer????

My horse needs Factor 50 on a bare patch of skin on his back- and we had a cat which burnt its ears sunbathing...so what about chooks????
If they're daft enough to stand out in the rain- are they daft enough to stand out in the hot sun????

tis not a daft question, i hadn't actually thought about it, being as how i haven't actually seen the sun since about september, but i dunno, pigs get sunburn too

I thought only humans and pigs could get proper sunburn? And that cats can get cancer in their ears if they are white eared?!

Our goats (white) and a pony with a white face used to get sunburned noses. We used to put zinc and castor oil cream on the scabby bits. I don't recall any of the chooks suffering that problem but I guess the same treatment (or udder cream) would do fine.

I think my farmers wife friend would pee herself laughing if I even suggested putting suncream on the chooks!!!!

How on earth do chooks cope in really hot places???? ( or even the Falklands!)???

I've heard of them needing vaseline on their combs in the winter to protect against frostbite, but no mention of sunscreen. Mine tend to lurk in the shade when it's scorching, as they're not good at hot weather generally

Our old Bo (horse) had a pink nose that used to sunburn. I think chooks prefer a bit of shade to getting too hot but then they do enjoy sunbathing when we have it at the moment. Hmmmmm interested to hear..........

nobody on the chicken forum had ever thought it might be a problem, even though the shade provided is only used when the chickens feel like it and not when they need it lol.

Yes...... Chickens are stupid and yes they will stand out in the sun.

A warm comb is good but a burnt comb isn't!
