  • Going by their colourings and markings, I'm very lucky to have 6 girls and 2 boys. A friend also has some of her own Welsummers and she's incubating some eggs (Welsummers don't make good mums apparently). We've agreed to swap one of her boys for one of mine in case I want to sell an unrelated trio. That leaves 1 boy to either sell, give away, re-home or eat. If I'm going down this self-sufficiency route then I've got to do it sooner or later so I think he'll be my first table one. At least he'll have a proper life and I'll know exactly what he's been fed on. But that's a long way off yet

    • That's a pretty good ratio, and a good plan to swap with your friend. It's not too bad if you only have one to worry about

            • I can tell which one's Rowan (boy) and Snowdrop (darkest girl) and Hebe (newest girl) but all the others I haven't a clue! I think I'll get some rings for them. Have decided that Blossom is a daft name for a boy so he is as yet nameless. Anyway, here's some more pics for you to oooo and ahhhh about from their playroom

                • blossom is only a bad name for a boy like buttercup is lol ... but buttercup is still him .... and it's fatal though, giving them names guarantees you won't eat them ... or is that just me??

try a bit of nail varnish in different colours till you get rings ... don't use red though

i'm definitely feeling broody .... lots

                  • Lynda, what size rings should I get? There's a seller on eBay selling 5.5mm, 8mm and 12mm and gives a warning that the wrong size can damage the chicks. Don't want that to happen!

                      • Can't understand why you need to disfigure them by putting rings on them aunty Mo? It wasn't until I tried photographing my main chooks legs to get advice on 'age by leg scales', that i realised half the poor beggers had rings on. I was out there straight away with a pair of scissors clipping them off.
I've had one chook suspended by her leg on a snag once and seen nasty video's of what can happen to blokes who wear rings whilst climbing ladders or shinning up telegraph poles whilst doing there job.

                        No thanks...don't like rings!

Congrats on your EIGHT chicks btw. I've only given a name to one of mine ..........Bruce Lee, cos he keeps flying two footed at tuthers!
My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

Rings have their uses, but better avoided where unnecessary. The 'freer' the free range the greater the risk, although some types are pretty safe.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

                          • i used them as identification when they were little, they don't have em now cos i can tell the difference .... tis just an easy way, when they get older it's easier to tell them apart, and the band ones would come off if there was a problem and they got caught on something

                              • Those babies are so lovely. It's very tempting to order some eggs from the internet. I'm doing my best to keep my broody off the nest at the moment. It's just the thought of some being boys. It's not that easy to find homes for cockerels is it?
