It gave me a tremendous sense of satisfaction to see them entering their super clean homes"Did you ever walk in a room and forget why you walked in? I think that's how dogs spend their lives."

I do the same as you Pat. It's lovely when it's all done but do the girls appreciate it? Do they heck! All the new bedding is chucked all over the place, nest boxes emptied and the contents chucked into a pile in the middle of the coop Don't you just love themMy girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

I clean mine out once a week and after doing so sprinkle ***** fluid lemon bin freshener round to kill any bugs and freshen the place up.
It works for me anyway! My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order

I skip out every week and top up with shavings and my OCD use of eco-might

I've used Vikron (kills everything even birdflu apparently!), dettol (stinks like loos), and dilute household bleach...All seem about the same but I think I need a powerwasher to get the dried poop off the wall (how do they get it there?). I'm hoping for a warm day soon to do mine again

Haven't got one yet - but I'm thinking of *****.
As to poop up walls - I know how my budgie does it. He has a swing and he twirls round the upright support, pooing as he goes. The wall is the nearest splatter-zone but sometimes he manages to get it on the sideboard too! However, I can't see chooks managing that!Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

If the walls of the chicken house are wood, then once mud or poo is really DRY it will come off with a stiff brush. If you want to disinfect the place afterwards, so be it, but I would never bother. Chickens lived in assorted homes for centuries without anything of the sort!Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

The ***** powder I use just smells of lemons! I am probably not doing the right thing, but it works for me and I've had no complaints from the chooks. My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order

Glad you asked the question - I was wondering myself. The books I've read say to wash out every 6-12 months and a bedding clean when ever suits you.
I haven't done the washdown yet but I clean the poo out every day or 2 with a cat cr*ap scooper (only 4 birds - wouldn't want to do it for 40) and have a proper sweep out once a week. I also leave the insides exposed to sunlight if poss and then sprinkle red mite power around all the cracks and crevices before putting new bedding down now its getting warmer.

I clean the inside of my eglu with warm water with a squirt of Ecover washing up liquid about once or twice a fortnight, depending on how it is. Poo tray emptied 1/2 times a week, nest box as needed (usually every two days ish, I use a small plastic 'seaside' spade to scoop poop and top up with shavings as and when). Every so often I put Citrocidal (sp?) in the rinse water for the house, as it is a natural disinfectant, and a little goes a long way. The girls have it in their water too.Life is brief and very fragile, do that which makes you happy.
