Empty Egg Yesterday, MASSIVE egg to Day!!

Hello one & all,

After finding that empty rubbery egg yester day look what to day has brought.

This beast is massive! 110g 9cm long by 15.5 around the widest bit I had to measure it as I've never seen such a large hens egg. What is going on?? Is this normal? Will it damage my hen?

I've no idea what is inside, well I mean I have an idea what is inside an egg but will it be just a huge egg or what. Waiting for the OH to come home, I just have to see his face

The egg piccies are, group of may banty & normal hens and the other has 'the beast' and a normal 80g egg.

Mother nature is just so surprising and clever.

Bet that made her eyes water!!! Puff laid a huge egg one day last week - no surprise that she missed the next day!

That sounds like a double yolk egg to me. It happens occasionaly to our chickens and is more ususal when they are younger. If it happens often it can be concidered a undesirable trait because the double yolk eggs cannot hatch.

Double yolkers will develop a bit, but I don't know of any that have ever hatched 2 live chicks. The theory (I am told) is that there is only one airspace, so the second chick doesn't get a chance to breath before hatching.....

That will almost certainly be a double yolker, but sometimes the really big ones have a second, standard-sized egg inside because the first egg didn't get laid and a second one formed around it. Young pullets are a bit prone to these weirdnesses, because the laying cycle is quite complicated and it can sometimes take a little while for their bodies to get the hang of it!

I can't get over the size of that egg! Showed Hubbie and he was amazed too!
Have you cracked it? Was it a double yolker as expected?

What a whopper! Bad mum that I am I can't remember how much our biggest egg weighed, but we did have some ginormous ones at first, including a triple yolker, which I didn't even realise was possible at the time. Yours could even be one....

Enjoy it, whatever you do with it, and be thankful you didn't have to lay it !

Not done the deed yet, saving it for the week end. I've never seen a triple yolker, if it is i'm sad enough to take a pic!

From the sublime to the ridiculous

Just been out to collect the first eggs of the day and this is just stoooooooopid! Last weekend I got a huge egg (102g), this morning the tiniest that one of mine has ever laid, just 17g. I'd love to know which of the girls is producing these
