As we're not allowed to put up permanent fencing on the allotments, I was at a loss as to how to put up a barrier so the girls could come out of their run. Someone told me about that orange fencing they use on building sites.
I found some at the builder's merchants, £47 with the iron pins to hold it up for a metre wide roll x 50 metres.
Result, temporary fence around the plot so when I'm gardening on this plot, they can come out to play. And it's very moveable, I have for instance moved it round in front of my new raspberry bed so they can't dig there.
It's been a beautiful day and done lots of digging, able assisted by the 5 girls who've gorged themselves on worms, eelworms, slugs and other delicacies they've found. They've not been much help in the actual digging. Just as I've thought oh look there's a bit of couch grass, one of them's trodden in my hole and I've had to search through for said couch grass all over again. I got covered in flying earth, scrabbled fingers from overeager hens digging away but they've turned everything over, eaten a lot of nasties and seemed to have had a high old time.
Sadly I can't leave them out when I'm not there because of fox danger but at least three times a week they can now have a roam round and I get to enjoy their company and laugh at their antics. My favourite was when Enid digging enthusiastically dislodged a small stone, it went flying and hit poor old Monica behind the ear and she staggered backwards looking very alarmed...
