  • Preserving/treating a chicken house.

My chicken house has arrived!!!!!!!! A friend who is a joiner has made it for us and it's lovely, exactly what I wanted even though the 'design' was something I'd quickly biro'ed on the back of an envelope. He hasn't treated it though as he wasn't sure what the best thing to use was around poultry - he usually makes fitted wardrobes and the like - I'm not sure what would be for the best either, the wood is smooth planed so a lot of the bog-standard wood treatments are out. Also I'd quite like to do it in a colour other than brown. What would be best stuff to use?

You need to use a microporous paint. That allows the wood to breathe whilst still protecting it. I think Cuprinol or Sadolin make microporous paints, do check the tin though.

Cuprinol Garden Shades come in some lovely colours - dusky lilac and iris and sage. They are safe for children and pets too.

Whatever you choose, I would consider painting the whole of the inside with gloss! It makes it SO much easier to clean .

Thanks everyone. I've just sent OH to Homebase to get a cuprinol colour chart. And I'm considering glossing the inside, possibly white to make it feel lighter. The outside is going to be something really lovely though, I'm leaning towards the Dusky Lilac.
