A few weeks ago one of our hens started to limp quite a bit. She was still moving around ok and eating so we left it for a week to see if she got better. As she seemed to get worse and slow down on her eating we took her to the vets. Nothing could be found so we were given some painkillers and told to leave it another week and if she had not perked up to take her in again.
A week later we took her back again as she had decided that she was going to stop moving around completely and eat less. Again the vet could find nothing wrong with her apart from being underweight so as a last ditch attempt she gave us some antibiotics and told us that unless she started to eat we would need to say goodbye.
Right on cue she started to eat but now it is another week gone and she is not moving. We took her to the vets just to be sure again as the antibiotics seemed to do well and was given a course of them to be given orally. She now eats well when we put food and greens out for her but will not move for it. When she sits down she sits on her bum so to speak and stretches her legs out in front of her.
I have now noticed that she is starting to close her eyes alot and her feathers are starting to fall out slightly on her bum. She will get up and come out into the garden although close to the hen house and go back to bed again on her own but during the day she does hardley anything else. Her comb is still reasonably red.
As we have been to the vets three times and each time they are stumped I wondered if anyone else has experienced anything similar. I have asked most people I know with chickens and no one has yet come up with an idea.
Any ideas would be really appreciated.
