Oooooh sorry to hear that. I've got a peaky one too - she gets like at every couple of weeks or so. I think she lays the 'squashies' too. She has actually started to replenish her feathers at last, but I expect she'll be the first to go.

At least you gave her the opportunity to be a real, happy chicken for the last few months of her life

Really sad Hayley. I wonder if it's the time of year/inclement weather etc with these ex-batts? I've got a couple beginning to look seedy but I have had them for well over a year.
I'm not sure how long we can reasonably expect them to go on particularly as they're obviously not bred for longevity.
I guess we just have to love and appreciate them for as long as we can and give them the life they deserve.

Oh what a shame Hayley. They do seem to go down very quickly don't they?

Poor little thing...whatever it was- it was certainly quick for her.
            Very sad for you xx

(((hugs))), it's always upsetting to lose an animal, although as yet we haven't lost a hen, just hamsters and fish (and dogs and ponies, although they come into a higher catagory for me ). As others have said, at least you gave her a happy life whilst she was with you, which she will have been truly grateful for. She's off in the great Dust Bath in the Sky now.

Thanks guys, shame really as Cocoa was one of our faves named right at the beginning cause she was obvious. She was one of my best layers and one of the biggest her feathers had just about got to their best as well. Sod and his law again. DD doesn't know yet as she's been at a friends since Friday and we haven't told her on purpose, she's home later this morning
