i have finally puswaded my mum to let me have chickens aslong as the deeds say i could...
deeds do they matter?
can you change them?
and if they say you cant have chickens can i keep quail?
btw im 14

Chickens??? ...well deeds are important, although many peeps 'get away 'with not followiing the deeds exactly if the neighbours don't mind.

For example our English deeds say we can't hang out washing on a Sunday!
No-one cares near us.

Chickens might be a bit noisy though -esp after they have laid- so if a neighbour objects then you would have to get rid of them- and waste any money you have paid out.
The deeds may say 'poultry' and not chickens
You might be OK with quail- peeps do keep avaries in their gardens- i'm not sure how noisy they can be though.
As your mom says- check the deeds

ok thanks ill ask my neighbors wont mind with the offer of free eggs so ill talk to them when i next see them

Quail can be hard work, even more than chickens, and they sometimes eat each other if they think the space is too cramped and the eggs are tiny. Maybe you could consider bantams - like half-size chickens - actually they are chickens but bred to be a smaller size. I have both, and the bantams are usually friendlier (but it depends on the breed). It depends really where you're going to keep them and how much space you can give them

You could get some fancy bantams and claim they are pets, not poultry, Mr Worm Mine only really lay regularly in spring - the rest of the year they just look decorative

On the downside, bantams are expensive to buy (about twenty-five pounds each), but on the other hand they eat a lot less than full-sized chickens so they are cheaper to keep. The eggs are lovely, too, with big bright yellow yolks, and about 2/3 the size of a standard hen's egg.

ok i like the look of silkies i suppose you could class them as pets or could you put a mix say 3 silkies and 3 egg layers??

Silkies are very tame, but on the downside they might get bullied by large hens. If you want eggs, see if you can find someone who breeds miniature Light Sussex and/or Rhode Island Reds. If/when I get a bigger run I'd love a couple of those, as the full-sized versions are good layers. My pekins are lovely, but prone to broodiness and seasonal laying

I wouldn't mix quail with chooks EVER! Quail are much closer to wild creatures (they can be tame, but they have more wild instinct) and a LOT smaller.
