  • Chicken Towers is finished!!

Mr OWG has finished the chicken and duck house - I am so pleased!!

When we made the pen, the ducks have been sleeping in the shed by themselves, but our goal was to have all the birds in the shed, leaving the old chicken ark for new arrivals/rabbits/whatever etc.

What with the weather and work etc, he has not been able to do the work until now, but finished it yesterday.

Shed interior with Chicken Towers inside (comprising of nest boxes and perches)

Exterior with original pop hole (bottom) and new higher entrance and ramp

Brilliant! We didn't realise till we got ours what 3 dimensional lives they lead if they get the chance. Ours love to climb and fly up to their house roof. They fly onto the overturned garden chair I keep in the run too, and use it for a perch. I turn it over so it doesn't get soggy in the rain. To think our original run plans were for a lower one, like an eglu run. Chickens really love to flap around!

Thanks guys... the girls have never had ramps before, so are getting used to them slowly! Actually, before this, they'd never got higher than 2 feet really as they had a little ark to sleep in.

I shut the bottom pophole today, to get them used to going in and out of the top hole and finding the nestboxes etc. We've had 4 eggs, so they seem to have got the hang of it.

The upshot of finishing the shed is that I have room for more hens now!! So we're off to the poultry auction in a couple of weeks to see what they have

I love these threads where people show us their houses. All the different solutions to the same problems. My new one is still in the process of being painted, sort of pastel green with white trim, I've got this plan that my entire plot is eventually going to look like St Petersburg. I'm painting the shed yellow and white next, but don't tell OH. And blame Flummery, she put me on to Garden Shades paints.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Cats aren't a problem unless you have young chicks. Adult hens are a lot taller than cats, and it usually only takes one Jurassic Park stare to put the moggy in its place!

                            Dogs are another matter entirely...

My 2 still chase my girls... never catch 'em as the girls just perform and scatter. I'm still waiting for one to turn around and zap a cat..... The cats think it's a great game at the mo.... am worried that if they don't zap a cat soon, I'll end up with complaints as my girls really do protest the presence of a cat.
