Maran Problems...

Ok..thought I'd run this past my fellow chook keeping enthusiasts as I'm a bit stumped on this one.

As you know..we got the two new girls on Friday. Anyway...big Bertha is perfect...eating normally, laid her first egg here, quite relaxed. However, it's a different story for little Dorrit. She is easily half the size of Bertha, with no tail feathers etc...she's really quite scraggy actually...anyway...since she arrived she's been regurgitating clear fluid when she leans down to peck at the ground. I've seen some birds do this when you pick them up...like a panic response, but not all the time like this. She's quite bright really...considering she's like an ex bat....and she appears to be eating well despite this. However, her poo is really odd too...it's really runny with bits of corn etc in it...gritty and green. Never seen anything quite like it.

The breeder says she was fine when she was there...and that it's possibly something we've given her, but she's only had layers pellets...and some mixed corn at night with the others. She was passing this poo in the carrier home...so doubt it's anything she's eaten here. NOT THAT IT'S ABOUT BLAME ANYWAY...I don't care why she's like this, just want to make her better.

I'm just worried it's something serious....I don't think it's contagious or anything...but I'm concerned she won't 'make' it!

I've felt her crop...and it doesn't feel out of the ordinary...so we're not talking impaction...at least I don't think so!!

Anyway...sorry for the ramble....

I heard that green poo can be caused by not enough food, this maybe the reason she is smaller if she wasn't getting enough food. I would back off the corn for a few days and just try pellets maybe another feeder in a box that only she can get into (if she is smaller), maybe some poultry spice or avipro to help with the stress. The water coming out of her mouth when she bends down maybe due to her drinking to much (because she now can).

Funnily enough...she's drinking tons!! Waaaay more than any of the others...she's addicted to the water! I think you're right!...I think she's not been getting enough food...she's tiny compared to the other one we got with her. She doesn't seem too keen on the layers pellets, but then again she's getting a tiny bit bullied when she goes near the feeder...think I'll make her another wee feeding spot! I was thinking of doing some chicken porridge with poultry spice tonight for her and her sister only...see if I can feed them up a bit!

I'm so glad I just read this post... one of my girls just brought up some water and I went into a bit of a panic! She seemed ok in herself, just the pukey bit scared me, but if this is natural for some water to come up occasionally then all well and good. (1st time i've seen it happen in the 2 weeks we've had the girl's)

Sometimes they do it as a stress response when you pick them up...or obviously apply pressure to their crop. However, I too have never seen any of my girls do this before this maran started doing it. Still, proves that no matter how long you've had the girls...they'll always teach you new things!

Maybe you could try and fatten her up with some porridge and spice???- give a bit to the others - but more for her????

I was a bit worried when I opened this thread cos I think ( know) we'll be getting some Marans soon - and wondered what they'd be susceptible to.

water regurgitation??..I'd never read up or heard of that before...though now it sounds logical...thank goodness for the chook knowledge on this forum!!!!

I'm planning on doing just that Nicos...in fact, think I'll make some porridge right now. I'm not sure she'll eat it though, or if the others will let her. Even if I separate the food containers, the favs still take over both!

To be honest...I don't think this is down to the breed...I think she's just ended up being a little bit neglected. Nobody's fault...just chicken life for you, I guess!

Sounds like she's not been eating enough, overdrinking and not enough grit in the past.... with the corn passing straight through her. Try grinding the pellets down a bit to help out a little. Fingers crossed. Hope she recovers quickly!
