  • Don't count your chickens......

    ...........................................before they are hatched!

    I know this, but............

My Dorking eggs are in the incubator, I like the idea of white eggs so I shall deffo be pleased if I hatch any females. The Dorking is reputed to be a good meat bird though, especially when crossed with others (something about hybrid vigour bla de bla de bla!)

What I need to know is.......when crossing for meat purposes, do I need to use the Dorking male or the Dorking female?

If it's the male, I need to prey for at least one cockerel in the hatch!

Been doing a little bit of online research and believe the cross I want/need is a Dorking hen with an Indian Game cockerel?

If this IS the case I DON'T want to be hatching another cockeral!

Mmmm, I seem to remember that the cockeral HFW used for his meat cross was borrowed from his heavily whiskered chicken guru?
I wonder what difference it would make if you did it the other way round (ie. which trait comes from which parent)?

Snadger can you get me the contact details for rent-a-cockerel please? I'd like to rent a boy bluebelle so I can have some blue chicks In about a year's time I'll have a very nice Welsummer cockerel that I'll rent out if anybody wants to borrow him (providing he keeps the noise down and the neighbours don't complain!)

Now why didn't we think of this before... for those who can't have a cock (hehe), rent one from a fellow member.
Would it work if the hen was to be taken to the cock??? Now there's a thought!

I so badly want an orpington, but there is no way I can afford to buy one just for eggs (they lay very little apparently).

I must be very tired, and possibly brain dead at this hour... so please ignore what you will from my very blond post. lol
