  • Could I have a poorly hen?

We have had 2 brown hens since last July and have recently bought a bigger coop and run and bought 2 blue stars and 2 black rocks. After the initial pecking order thingy things have calmed down and they all seem to get along fine. I am getting 3 large and 1 small egg per day.
I am abit worried about one of the black rocks. I have noticed the last few days she is always the last out on a morning and the first to bed at night. She also seems quite abit slower than the others. She doesn't seem to scramble for the food but takes her time with eating. I've just let them all out in the garden and the other 5 are running round scratching at the ground and she has just flopped down to sunbathe.
I have handled her, ( in fact she is the tamest one and even my 6 year old can pick her up ) and I cannot find anything obviously wrong.
I don't think she is laying yet but if she has just started could that cause this behaviour? ( I think my 3rd egg comes from the larger black rock but I have yet to find the culprit of the small egg ).
Her tail is also down alot of the time. I am wondering if she is the youngest of the bunch as her legs still have really fluffy feathers on them whereas the other black rock seems to have 'grown up' feathers.

I am keeping an eye on her but is there anything wrong that springs to mind?

How old is she? It could be because she's coming up to laying. I'm sure someone with more experience will be along to offer suggestions. I hope she picks up. As you say, she's maybe just the baby of the bunch.

I'm not sure exactly but they were POL. I've had them nearly 3 weeks and only noticed this behaviour the past 3-4 days.
Maybe I ought to stake out the coop tomorrow and see who's laying the mystery egg.

Have a look at the thread "Thirteen days and I'm worrying". Might give you a lead. POL girls seem to often get stressed when they're about to lay.

as others have said one of mioe was showing similar symptons for the last few days & yesteday evening I found an egg in the middle of the lawn as though it had just landed there, and she's looking more like normal today

Thanks for that, I have just been to check up on her and all the others are running round and she's laid in the nest box.
Hopefully that could be it, she's becoming quite a favourite.
