  • Lucky Duckies!

Yay! We have dug out a bigger, better, and rather lovley new pond for the ducks! We have put in the liner, and have filled it with water. There is a filter pump in there too so we do not have to replace the large volume of water that it holds!

It's about 3 Meters in diameter and around 1/2 a meter deep. There is a slope at one end so little animals (That includes the ducks too! ) can get out. We are also experimenting with aquatic plants, Fingers crossed the ducks will not destroy and dessimate them!

They seem to really enjoy having lots of space to swim around. In the warm evenings mossies decend to lay thier eggs in the water! Luckily, the ducks swim after them and snap them up! They will do this for hours, and it always makes me smile!

Looks like they are going to enjoy this luxury all their lives! Yay!

They are some seriously happy looking ducks - great job with the pond!

How about some sand at the edges so they have something to poke their bills into looking for scrummy() bugs n such.

Hmmm. I will bear that in mind. Seems they have already got a little mud patch, the pond overflowed a bit while I was topping it up & they have made a mess of it!

Yup them ducks be very mucky creatures indeed and will soon trash the local area. My brother has em and I spent a weekend not so long ago helping to build a special duck zone in his garden. I think he was seriously fed up with Ducks 'helping' with the gardening all the time and his lady grouching about it a lot (all the time) so it was either that or ending up as Sunday lunch and they're vegetarians

Yea, I only let mine roam around the garden every now and then. They do not seem to mind much, as thier pen is quite large and they have plenty of entertainment. Like logs and rocks and a turf tunnel...and thier new pond of course.

There was a point where an area of the paddock was VERY muddy, luckily we solved that by blocking that part off temporarily and sowing some hardy grass seed. I hope it stays lush though...

I reckon you might be lucky with that grass - excellent fertiliser duck poo

They're very messy, but pay it back in the entertainment factor. A few goldfish in the pond will help keep the mozzies down. One or two might get snapped up but if you buy cheap 'feeder fish' they're relativly cheap and suprisingly hardy.

Good idea, although the mosquitos aern't really a problem, and I don't fancy keeping fish. Thanks for the idea anyway, it might help someone else reading this! Good job.
