Making a pophole and ladder for the Octagon!

Up til now I've been lifting the chicks out and taking them around and putting them in the run when it's sunny.
Time for them to have there own pop hole methinks so they can come and go at will. Originally I was going to use one of the lower door window openings. They are half over the floor which is 2 foot from ground level. After a bit of thought I decided to use one of the higher door windows as the opening with a ladder up to it. This should have the benefit of detering foxy to some extent, stopping any low level drafts in the coop and the ladder will add some higher purching areas in the sunshine which they appear to like. What can't be seen from the photo's below is a deflector inside, so the chooks have to make a right turn on entering. This will hopefully go some way to stopping the prevailing wind from blowing them around the coop. I had to ease the wired glass out with the framework, ut a sheet of perspex to make up the difference at the top, cut and make framing and knock up a ladder for them to climb up.
They helped of course and were on the ladder before I had it fastened in position. This was a good sign as I had slight reservations about them climbing the ladder.

My main worry is that this will be the first night they have put themselves to bed.........hopefully!

The first two are of the ladder and pop hole and the third is of one of my Fav cockerels who decided to pose for me!

This is great, Snadger. I loved The Octagon when I first saw it, but waiting until the chicks were in before looking at the problems of pop-hole, ladders and possible draughts is a stroke of genius. This way you know what their needs are before trying to solve the problems. Brilliant! I thought my Graceland was good, but essentially it's just a bog-standard (if rather large) chicken house, with a niffty paint-job.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.
