  • Is this normal / a problem? 2 eggs in an hour...

This query is sort of related to Sue's 'very late egg' thread so please excuse me if I should really add this query to that thread - I'm new to all this forum stuff!

Cagney normally lays by 7am! I just thought she was having a day off as she has only been laying about 10 days but then about 2pm I noticed an egg in the run where she had been sitting. She normally lays dark brown eggs but today's was very pale, like it had been dropped in bleach. About an hour later I noticed she was sitting on another egg which turned out to be very soft as it burst like a balloon when she stood on it. She has always laid in the nest box until today but I have been in their ark a bit (trying to adjust the perch as she is still not taking herself to bed after 3 weeks) which might explain the laying outside.

Is this anything to be concerned about - like being egg bound or something? In which case what should I do/look out for? Or is this just a blip, perhaps because she is young? Other than being a little quiet she seems to be fine, and was herself this morning hence the day-off theory first thing.

    Any advice appreciated.

Chances are it's a normal early egg laying blip - it takes young hens a while sometimes to sort their systems out. Is it possible the egg she was sitting on in the run was not hers, and then she went into the nest box to lay her own, which just happened to be a soft one.

I wouldn't worry about her if her behaviour is otherwise normal.

Thanks for the help. They were definitely both hers as she was on her own when the first one appearred and I pretty much saw her lay the second soft one. Both of them were laid in the run where she had been sitting too.

She has laid lovely eggs daily for the last week or so, so I am hoping it is just a blip. Am just a little concerned as it is all new to me (first chooks!) and there are some worrying stories when you read up.

Of course you're worried! We all worry ourselves crazy when chooks haven't read the instruction manual and do things we don't want or expect them to do Like the others have said, it's probably just a "blip" until her egg-making bits get going properly. As a "just in case", has she been wormed recently? Worms apparently can make the girls lay soft eggs and look generally "under the weather". If they haven't been done, perhaps it might be an idea to do them all?
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there
