  • A Yolky Mystery...

Just went down to check on our ladies, and they were all fine, just a bit peeved with the weather... However, on checking the nesting boxes, found 2 more eggs, giving us our regular 5 (from 5 hens). However, the mystery is that there was also a yolky mess on the bottom on the nesting box, but no sign of shell, and no broken eggs at all today.

    Any ideas?

I think someone laid a softy egg and ate the rest of the egg! We've had one or two of these when we first got girlees. Even saw a weird white sac thing in run - the egg membrane/softy shell I guess.

That was my first thought, but we've only got 5 chooks, and I collected three eggs this morning, and two more this afternoon, when I found the yolky bit. Could it be something that cam out with one of the eggs - ie would have been a double yolker?

I wondered the same thing - was it a yolk that didn't get incorporated? We may never know!

Doesn't happen often, but a chook can occasionally lay more than one egg in a day...it's only happened the once for us,but we got 13 out of 12 once!
I don't know a lot,but could it have been possible that one of your girls had a soft shelled one that she couldn't manage to squeeze out,but then when the next proper shelled one was ready it pushed the soft shelled one out???

I wondered about that possibility. Didn't like to say, not having chooks at present.....
