  • hatching bantams and large chooks together

ok so i have 3 poland and 2 silkies ... i'm guessing these will hatch on day 18?? whereas the aracuana and marans will hatch on day 21 ?? or are l/f silkies classed as l/f even though they are only ikkle?

and if they are gonna hatch on day 18 do i put the other eggs in 3 days before? or do i just shove em in and hope they hatch around the same time??

We had four Legbars(large eggs)& four bantams.
Popped them all in together & one of the Legbars hatched first, followed in no particular order by two other Legbars & one little bantam(twas in the middle of the night,so I missed it!)...although the other three bantam eggs didn't hatch, when candled their development seemed the same as the others.
So,from my very limited experience, the hatch day was the same....but then maybe we'd have had more success if we'd staggered popping them in,possibly the banties that didn't hatch were actually ready on day 18,but the humidity hadn't been there for them???...maybe wait for someone that knows the right answer!
I take it they've all arrived safe & sound?

Hmmmmmm Lynda!!! Why do you have to do things complicated? If it was me (glad it's not) then I'd shove them all in at the same time and start increasing the humidity on day 16 and keep my fingers crossed. I don't think the day 21's will come to harm with the increased humidity - unless someone can tell me otherwise

yeah well if i'd been a little less impatient, i'd have remembered i'd have kittens at the same time too ... yup all arrived safe and sound

though i'm not at all impressed with the colour of the copper black marans eggs why do people breed from bad stock and sell them as pure breeds? anyway luckily i'm not going to be breeding from them but i'm not expecting choccie eggs off them either

the 6 mixed marans are huge and not bad at all, and the poland ones are just soooooo tiny even smaller than the silkies

2 of the aracuanas are a decent size, the others are very small, so i'm suspecting they may be bantams and the seller didn't mention it on the auction

oh well i'm sure they will be beautiful and we shall have lots of pretty ikkle babies running round in 3 weeks

anyway all 18 fit easily in the incubator .... so tommorrow we start incubating

My bantams come on day 21 same as the LF. They may put in an appearance one day early if they are very fresh, ie start incubating the egg the same day it is laid. With eggs that come by post, or that have waited a while before incubation, then my experience has been that they will hatch on day 21, and sometimes a bit later.

So there's your answer Lynda Put them all in at the same time. I'd ask the supplier of the bantam eggs though how long theirs usually take to hatch and take it from there
