One of the reasons I want Marans is that they are good for meat and eggs- which are chocolate brown ( sell here a £3 for 6!!!).
The gals are laid back and mumsy and good at sitting on eggs ( maybe that's not so good???)
No idea what I'd cross them with though..well I DO know- it'll be with my bantams....but that might not be my first choice..who knows though??.....will let you know in a few months!!!
PS- Marans are already a mix of quite a few nice breeds already....I'll see if I can find the site again ....

The old joke - a chicken with a spider - enough legs for a big family
Or one chook with Jordan for enough breast for the family!

For eggs, I would go for Araucana x Minorca for really big blue eggs, just to be different
For meat, the best cross is (apparently) Ixworth x Indian Game. Trying to find a really productive strain of Ixys is problematic though. They are supposed to be excellent egg layers as well as very meaty, maturing in a relatively short time for a pure breed (about 26 weeks) but being so rare, many lines are unfortunately inbred.
