We have a meadow out the back of our house which is too uneven to get a mower on, so a mate uses it to graze his horses on.

At the moment it's home to 2 mares and their foals which is really sweet, but on a wander over the field today I saw the hens eating the horse poo... really good scratch and then a scoff. I'm not gonna smell their breath later !!!

More annoying as I was hoping to collect it in the wheelbarrow for my compost heap but the little beggars have just scattered it now.

They were probably picking out undigested grain (oats?). Horses are terribly inefficient at digesting grain, but chooks can recycle......

Our old dog used to eat it and roll in it. He loved having a bath too, so the threat of the tub was no deterrent at all.

Horse dung, especially the smelly stuff from grazing horses, will be full of flies and bugs. That's what the Chooks would be after. If I don't clear mine away for a day or two the crows do the same thing, which makes clearing the field a lot harder!

My dogs are the worst as they eat chook, cat, horse and their own dog poos, they are poo obsessed and until they've had a good long drink I go nowhere near their breath
