I knew that it was clear used in the instance I mentioned but can't think of a reason why it would have to be, but didn't think of using coloured either....<g>

        Just a hypothetical thought.....

.....if an egg was under a broody and cracked, and it was then painted with scarlet nail polish would the broody peck at it? If so, then clear would be best in that situation.

PS You can tell how much I don't know about chooks!

It's a very valid question actually Jules. It's possible a hen WOULD peck at it because they go for all things red, blood being the obvious one (bullied hens and all that). So maybe clear, or another non red shade is best? Who knows, I've never tried it!!

I think thats very likely - but for the incubator any colour could go!

Just be careful that the egg doesn't go off and affect the others. If it starts to smell take it out straight away and discard it.

I thought I should update everyone.......I was turning my eggs about an hour ago and the cracked one stood up on end and refused to lie back down again.......shone a torch through it and there was a really large space (presumably full of dead air) at one end, which was no doubt what was making it stand on end. At least I tried. No news on the others till next week...will keep you all posted.

Aww.....that's a shame. If you need to dispose of it, drop it whole down the loo and flush quickly. If it has rotted it will reek.

But you did try, you gave it your best shot. Don't be hard on yourself.
