  • The Story of the Banty & some eggs........

One of the banty hens I hatched under a broody last September went broody, as much as I tried to convince her it was not a good ided she carried on so I purchased 6 Welsumer hatching eggs off a well known 'net auction site [miss purple banty, the broody hen came from the same web site and was one of a 5 which hatched from 6 eggs]

She has been sitting since the 6th June, [didn't want to tempt fait by letting you all know] on the 9th she booted two eggs out the nest box, took us ages to see they had hairline cracks, next day found the shell & some of the insides out the nest box, not sure if that one broke as it was booted out of was deliberateley pecked & eaten. To day the 10th day we check her eggs & found one with a tiny pin prick & yolk seeping out, binned that then & attempted to 'candle' the othe two eggs, dark shells but I'm pretty sure they were clear.

I am not sure what I'm looking for so placed them back under the broody banty.

Would she sense that the eggs are dead & boot them out. I have 'Specs' my mad speckaldy sitting on 6 Cream Crested legbar eggs & she seems to be doing OK.

Well, some hens will kick an egg out they sense to be undeveloping, but some will sit on clear eggs right through to day 22 or 23, when I make the decision for them. Maybe your hen is hypersensitive and knows they are not right. By this stage you should be able to see a darker "spot" when you candle them but it's always difficult with dark shelled eggs. Go with the hen's instinct and let her continue to sit on the eggs she wants to, and if she rejects them, throw them away.

My hen kicked a couple out I put them back under her(should be hatching today) she was really persistant with one so I took it off her and put it in the incubator it took and is today rocking away to itself. I'm going to put it back with her when it hatches.

Well, she is still sitting on the two eggs so I'll leave then be & see what happens. With good luck I'll be posting some pics of chicks by the end of June.
