  • Poisonous eggs?

One of my chickens has taken to eating a few of the leaves from my Brugmansia. I know it isn't poisonous to birds, but it is to humans, and was therefore wondering if there's any risk of the alkaloids making their way into the eggs and causing people to have hallucinations from their fry-up?

        lol Jules!

Thinking about it, I'd imagine it would be ok. You tend to need to feed them large quantities of something to taint the egg, so I'd imagine a small amount of the plant wouldn't do any harm. But...again...I don't really know!

I agree with Jules - you should try it...it's the only way to know for sure!

Well, people have been killed by drinking cow's milk after the cow has eaten poisonous plants. I would look more carefully into it before trying it, to be honest.

I don't think it would kill me, but eating a small amount of Brugmansia will give you quite an unpleasant trip apparently.

              Slightly Scientific

My oldest has a MA in Chemistry. I've asked him and he says that h doesn't think anythingnasty will be in the eggs. He's of the opinion that the alkaloids wouldn't survive the chook's digestive system.

Also, when you use organic substances for...er....illegal purposes, the substances are usually concentrated, processed or dried in some way before you can use them for trippiness.....the Brug leaves were fresh.

How do you know that the chooks haven't eaten the Brugmansia leaves before?

Well, as mentioned above, a small amount of fresh brug leaf will make you ill.

I've only just started hardening it off outside. It's been sitting in the house since before we had the chooks.

                  Hmmmm.......

...read the Weirdo site, and also Wikipedia.

Beautiful those the Brugmansia are, I don't think I'd have one in my garden. Not unless I was considering Shamanism....and, tbh, I think sewing is more my thing.

It seems a horrible waste, but maybe you should throw away any eggs for the next few days. I wondered whether cooking the eggs would make any difference, but can't find any info on exactly how Shamans use the plant. I don't know if they take it fresh or boil it up first - boiling would suggest that cooking increases potency so cooked eggs would be bad too.

Personally I'd live dangerously and eat the eggs. Today we've had fried eggs for lunch and yorkshire pud with dinner, made with eggs laid after chooks were given sheep wormer. Usually I give eggs back to chooks after worming but forgot. Anyway we both should be worm free for a while now. lol
