  • Mash recipes please

    Hi folks

    Two queries for you:-

    * Have read about cluckies being fed "mash" - what is it exactly? Not layers mash but "mash" - is it something to do with boiled potatoes?

    * What do you think about feeding cluckies with a bit of RAW mince - just as a treat!! To bribe them into going to bed for instance! or getting worming powder into them - Alice, our new hen, is NOT into grapes!

The only mash I've ever heard of is layers mash so can't help you there. We give ours a weekly treat of raw mince, they love it and it's no different to them eating worms.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Ours are given mash when there are sufficient leftovers or veg peelings - not often at this time of year! Basically, all table scraps are put in a bucket reserved for the hens - ends of bread etc. Veg peelings are boiled up and added to the bucket along with a measure of layers pellets (unless there are lots of scraps) and the bucket is put in the hen run for them to enjoy.

I cook extra potatoes and root veggies, mash them up with some layers pellets, poultry spice, garlic powder, ground-up egg shells and some water to make it all stick together. I add any bits of fruit (apple cores, strawberry tops etc) plus bits of tomato, cucumber etc. Sometimes it's pasta instead of spuds. That's for the summer, in the winter I add hot porridge. It's always given around mid-afternoon so that I know they've already had a good feed of just pellets.
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

I forgot to say that our hens have ad lib pellets at all times. Also, people who have eggs from me know that the hens are re-cycling the table scraps.
