  • Roll Away Nest Boxes

Following advice from here, we bought one of those roll away nesting boxes - you know the kind that slant so that the egg rolls away into a wee box that the girls cant get to.

To say they hate it is probably an understatement! They have made themselves a wee nest from straw in another corner and are studiously avoiding any dealings with the box at all!

So how can I entice them in?

I cant line it with straw or else the eggs wont roll away. I cant leave an egg in it to give them a clue or else it will simply roll away.

So what do I do? p-l-e-e-z-e!!

Are they eating the eggs they lay in their straw nestbox? If not I would give in and line the roll away boxes.

I agree with Frias, if they aren't purposely damaging the eggs then they don't really need a roll-away nest box. If they are damaging them on purpose, then start off with a straw lining and take a little away each day once they're used to it
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

thanks ladies...actually frias I have no idea whether oyu are a bloke or a woman - hopefully I haven't offended you!

I will line it with straw today and see how we go. I do think they are doing it on purpose as I see them waiting for eggs to be laid sometimes. I'm also doing a bit of solitary to try and establish exactly WHO is the main culprit.....not sure what I'm going to do when I find out..............

Have you tried the chilli eggs treatment? That's supposed to put them off eating them.

Hi Hayley, I got it from here : Wells Poultry Housing and accessories
                  Tel: 01495 371727

i also got the plastic insert about £4 but i probably didnt need it as the house thing has a metal grid type base - cold on the bum maybe so actually the plastic insert was, on hindsight a good idea after all!

Communication was a bit non-existent and order took ages to come but was well packaged when it did.

BTW - put straw in it today and removed an unpecked egg from under someone this afternoon! Progress is being made me thinks!

My auld Gran wouldn't eat an egg unless it had sh*t on it! At least that's what she told the punters she was trying to sell eggs to!

Have you noticed btw that some puveyors of supposedly organic eggs always leave a small feather in the box (accidently on purpose of course)) as if egg purchasers will be fooled by that!

I can envision a little old lady with a feather mattrass on the production line adding a feather to each box...........nice work if you can get it!
