  • Nutty Chook...

.....has anyone else got a cream legbar? If you have, is your's a nut case?

Hattie has been jumping about, making lots of boks which sound more like quacking (she's sounded like that since we first got her) flying up to the top of the frame around the raised bed and down again. When she lands she runs around like a mad thing....if she had a t-shirt on, I swear she'd pull it over her face like a footballer!

She is so funny, and also the bravest chattiest of my girls. I can pick her up and she'll feed out of my hand too. She is such a character.

I was worried about her sanity..... The other girls look at her like 'Poor girl....just humour her'

Gladys, Shirley and Buffy are quite prim & proper, although they weren't at all ladylike over their few grapes this afternoon! That was more of an all out stampede.

I love stampedes, it's hysterical when the late ones suddenly realise and come legging with all propellors rolling

Just got off the phone to find Hattie in my raised bed. She actually got under the netting, and has completely flattened my peas and beans!! There are two big holes where Hattie has had lovely dust baths, and she was making herself very comfy in the second hole when I found her, cheeky madam!

I was sitting outside with my coffee only this morning admiring said peas & beans. They were about 2ft high and flowering profusely. I'd given myself a pat on the back for managing to produce such lovely plants too

They can be saved, but I need OH's help and he's not here until this afternoon. I think crutches are needed for my little crippled plants!

No use clipping flight feathers, as she crawled underneath, so some of that plastic lawn edging stuff is called for.

What a little monkey, non chook lovers just don't realise what individual charaters they all have, do they.

We moved our huge log pile to the other side of the garden today, which left us extra space so that we could move the henhouse right back to the wall. It'll be more protected from Winter winds now.

It also means that the enclosed run is now on soil, and the girls went loopy for the worms!! They won't touch snails or slugs yet though. They've also loved the fresh grass that the outdoor run is now on.

On Sunday we'll put bark chippings down for them. Also, the DD is going to help me trim wing feathers as all four girlies have been very flighty this afternoon, trying to get into the raised bed to pinch the veggies & strawbs.

I've had them almost a fortnight, and their personalities are really starting to come through.

Jules, have a look at my albums on my profile to see what my hubbs built last year for me. We had cat poop probs and he built panels to go along the raised beds. Glad he did as it's now VERY handy for keeping the cheeky chickens out! Although checking on my kohl rabis and swedes yesterday, the leaves that point out towards the concrete path all have a jagged edge to them like they've been sawn off. - Or more rather pecked off by the chickens! At least I'll know what to do with the leafy tops from the kohl rabi and swedes then!

                  LOLOL Lemon,

The raised bed has fruit cage netting all over the top, and supposedly cat proof mesh around the sides. It is cat proof, but not kitten or Hattie proof - they go under the mesh!! I worry for Hattie's sanity but she is quite determined and definitely not stupid.

I think I've managed to save the peas, the beans look very sad though. I've also just planted in four tomato plants that were in sickbay at Homebase and my heart went out to them. I'm going to buy rabbit fencing and sink it in all around the raised bed when I'm off on Sunday.

Despite the haovc wreaked, I was killing myself laughing at Hattie. She sits on the frame and quacks at me...just so funny that she sounds more like a duck than a chook.
