  • Unwell chook

Oh dear, I'm afraid to have to say that Korma is unwell. She is not her inquisitive sprightly self. Her tail is tucked down, she often has her eyes closed. Hubbs saw her making funny yawning motions - as if she was 'gagging'.
I think she's been doing the runny and watery poos lately. We bought soem Verm-X last weekend and they had their 3day dose, although I can't guarantee she ate any, but I know Bokky has and she is fine, bright as a button and I think she is our daily layer. (Only one a day since Dec, despite them having both laid since we got them in Aug.)

Not sure what's wrong or what I should do?

She's not that interested in food either. Hubbs gave them some raisins this morning and they usually go crazy for it - she was very slow to react although having some.

I don't know either I'm afraid, but if you were thinking gapeworm,I'm sure I read somewhere...maybe on here...that VermX has no effect on them?

If you suspect it's worms of one sort or another, I'd get some Flubenvet. I got mine online and there's enough for a small farm I'm sure!!! I think you might be able to get it at other places though. It might be nothing more than coming back into lay but I'd treat her just to be on the safe side

Sounds like Babs at the moment who is a bit up and down but we've had a moult and she's not taken it too well, they are starting to come back into lay and she looks better today.

I use Verm-x liquid that way they have to take it or die of thirst

Flubenvet will kill gapeworm if you think she has it. Verm X is more of a preventative and you have to administer it for 3 days each month I believe. I would dose them all with Flubenvet (7 consecutive days) and you can then use Verm X after that.

How about sour crop? Is her crop all squidgy and does her breath smell? Lots of threads on that.

Hmm....Suechooks....not sure about that one. Picked her up for a cuddle - she seemed light (maybe I'm imagining it?) Crop not very full, she stopped the yawning thing this morning. Didn't notice bad breath during cuddle and I've even sponged her poopy bum and she was ok about that. She picked up her tail a bit and I gave her some porridge (oats, milk and water - chookies fav) and added some powdered garlic, diatom and crushed eggshell. She ate some which pleased me until Bokky came along and polished the lot off!

In comparison to Bokky, her comb is quite pale red really - nowhere as vibrant as Bokky's. Oh, and I think she stopped laying in Dec (despite being a hybrid and POL in late Aug).

.......well it's a month since my last post about Korma....

.....she's been brighter and seemed like she might get better but now, I think she's on the slippery slope...............

we verm-X'd them, they had flubenvet, bio yoghurt.....and Korma's poopy bum recovered. She still has tail down and not so sprightly though.
Couple of weeks ago, whilst bum washing at 9:30pm (we'd been out). We discovered 'eggs' and hubbs saw some see-thru wormy things. She had antiseptic bath and some feathers trimmed (round bum area where 'egg's wouldn't leave.) That's recovered and we discovered a hard crop but squishy like plastacine. Few days of massages and its gone and poopy bum has cleared - but still has droopy tail.

She is barely eating and drinking and is a bag of bones that's too weak to take herself to bed. we put her in and out of house. We took her indoors last night and she's in a box but pretty splatto. She was eating raisins last night and drinking. We discovered a hard lump in lower part of abdomen (like a build up of poop?). Now, I've come home and she's listless but still alive. I'm thinking it's time for her to sleep forever....

How do you make a chicken poop? Or do I just hope she stays asleep and just doesn't wake up?

Do I leave her or do we 'do the deed'?

Hard lump in abdomen does not sound very good. Have you looked her symptoms up to try and give yourself a general idea/possible list of causes?

Doesn't sound too promising let us know what happens. (hug)

I take mine to the vet and he decides if it's time or not. Couldn't do the deed myself anyway. I had one that had tumours in her abdomen and I could never have diagnosed that myself.

Sounds like time to "do the deed" I'm afraid. If she is as poorly as you describe then ending her suffering would be the kindest thing to do. The hard lump you describe may possibly be a tumour.

Did you move them onto fresh ground after you wormed them? If they stay on the same site they just pick up the worm eggs and reinfect themselves straightaway.

It is with sad news that I report that Korma has passed on.............

After reading much on swollen abdomens; egg peritonitis; crop impaction and other chicken ailments, hubbs decided to give her a warmth bath. He dipped her bum in the water a couple of times, Korma let off some gas, pooped, then passed away. She has largely been asleep for much of today and to be honest we knew it was inevitable. We're not sure what caused her to be ill but she did suffer from crop impaction earlier this month and has lost an awful lot of weight.

I'm sorry she has gone as she was my fav of the two but am so glad that she is no longer suffering. I hope her chookie heaven consists of lots of porridge and cuddles.....

Thank you to all for your kind words and suggestions. I leave you with one of my fav photos that my hubbs took of Korma.....

So sorry to read this but she sounded so poorly that she really has gone to a better place - there's lots of worms and corn in chooky heaven! She obviously died knowing she was loved and cared for.
Having had 3 of my ex-batts die in the last few weeks and 5 new chooks stolen I can truly sympathise.
