On the positive side...you're going to thoroughly enjoy watching the little un

...I certainly didn't see as much of my tiny ones as I'd have liked to as they spent most of their time under Betty's wings!

One of my nieces hens hatched her own chicks no problem but killed all the chicks from eggs bought on internet. Don't know if this is unusual or not.
Hope your little one is doing OK.

Well- I've been there with doing resuscitation on 3 of my chicks which had been left out of the nest to go cold.
All died after the 2nd or 3rd occasion though.
I just had to put that down to the gals being first time mums...and me being a first time granny.
It is really very upsetting when you've been excited for 3 weeks in anticipation, and the mum gets it wrong at the expense of he babies.

Chooks are daft though- Romany was just following her instincts albeit completely wrong

Oh well if she hadn't spent 3 weeks sitting on the eggs then you wouldn't have your sweet little chick to play with now!!

Big hug to you- and a gentle little stroke to the chick! xx

            ( piccies???)

Oh how awful for you. Poor wee chick too!

Nature can be cruel, as we found out with our prem kitten.

Thank you all for your kindness, much appreciated.Littlin is asleep under the lamp.Does everyone feel guilty when this happens? My daughter says i should be proud i saved this one,she has a superficial mark under her eye where they tried to kill her too. Will feel better tomorrow, all the panic, bending quickly, twisting etc has done my arthritis no good at all.Ha ha nite nite, bath and bed for me.

That's a good idea I loaned out one of my chicks to a friend who only had 1 hatch (out of 24!!!) till she got some more (JG's back home now). They do come on a lot better with company. Well done Lonely for beating the odds

Have you had chicks before Jilly?...they really are so sweet- and such fun to watch.
Bet you're enjoying your time with Lonley!

Keep taking piccies- the wing feathers change every day- and then you suddenly get little fluffy bits for a tail!!( within the week I think)

Yes i have had chicks before, maybe 20yrs ago now,my children were very young then and only remember the layers that weve had since.I had a ten year break in poultry keeping due to work etc.So my husband had a bit of a shock when an eglu arrived and i hadnt told him anything about it!I was walking the dog at the time and it came a few days early. He took it very well,ha ha.Hes been very sweet and seems quite taken with lonely!I have told him this time about the other two chicks on order and he'll help out .What about you?How long have you kept poultry?

Only since November- it's been a huge learning curve too!

2 hatchings so far- one in February ( 3 out of 12 eggs) with 4 broody hens who were only 7 months old.
It's 2 of those we are culling on Sat- so at least we get to keep Tippytoes who is just about POL.
Last batch 5 weeks ago ( 8 out of 8) with one hen sitting a mixture of eggs.

Hope to get 3 Marans soon-old gals (stopping laying)- was going to be Sat- but change of plans as we're going to UK 3 times in the next 9 weeks- and I want to be around in case of bullying. Will give the chicks a chance to get bigger too.

Mine free range inside an electric fence ( 5 foxes) and sleep in a granite piggery at night ( bomb proof!!!)

Have to say, the peeps on the GYO site have helped me all along my journey, and to be honest I'm not sure I'd have had hens if it weren't for this forum ( even the chooks were from roitelet!)

                              Big thanks to everyone!!! xx
