If I cross my Heinz 57 bantam cock with my light sussex bantam hens I get birds that look just like Silver Sussex. Beautiful silver/grey pencilling on the chest and round the ruff with darker grey on the body. They aren't SS of course, but look just like them. Great little birds too.

I think (well in my 'umble opinion anyway) that when you cross 2 breeds, you're always going to get something that "looks" like some other breed. I know nothing at all about genetics, and I'm very easily confused by the subject - interesting though it is. When Basil and the 4 lovely Bluebelle ladies I've got are mature enough to breed, then I'm sure there'll be some very pretty back-yard-poultry produced; some might look like Marans, some RIR's and others? who knows, but it's going to be fun finding out That's why I'd like to try

The looking like one or another parent is right, its just that for the standard cross that produces bluebell hens the boys should take after their RIR mums....<g>

        Marans mad <g>

He looks great! Several of my little ones are starting to crow now - they sound like a cross between children's toys and Road Runner! The senior cocks look at them as if to say, "and what sort of noise do you think that is? Is that the best you can do?"
