  • Potato tops!

I have lovely neighbours at my allotment who sometimes give a few cabbage leaves to the chooks. I was dismayed to see this evening though that they had thrown potato foliage into the run!

I know that tatties belong to the solanum family and are supposed to be poisonous to chooks so I have taken the remainder out.

The chooks have been eating them though.............any ideas!

I will have a word with the neighbours when I see them as they weren't to know though!

I always though potato tops were poisonous but I've also been assured that chooks won't eat any poisonous plants. I let mine into the raspberry patch and they've eaten any leaves and fruit they could reach but haven't touched the pulmonaria that was growing underneath so I assume that's not good for chooks. I also thought rhubarb leaves were poisonous but read that chooks eat them as a natural wormer. I'm sure someone will know. Hope your chooks are OK.

I wouldn't have given them spud leaves Snadger, but if they've eaten them they may well be fine. They do tend to avoid anything really bad. Good idea to give the neighbour an idea of what they can and can't have. It's not obvious is it?
