  • Crowing Hen

Help! I've got a hen that for the last two day has started crowing. She's 100% hen as she gives me an egg a day. It's not quite as bad as the cockerel that was a few doors away (gone because of complaints by the neighbours), but she is loud . I don't want her to go the same way as the cockerel, but if she don't stop I fear it's going to be a case of "If it crows - It goes!"

LOL that's funny You could always bring her up to me, not got neighbours near-enough to notice!

Well, you'll just have to sit her down and have stern words with her! Tell her that "chookabokadoodle" isn't very nice language for a laydee to use, she should say chookbokbokchookbok instead. If any neighbours do complain though, show them the egg she's laid and tell them that she's just announcing what she's done and that she'll settle down eventually.

It's probably just an over-enthusiastic 'birth announcement'!

I read it's possible for hen to change sex and crow but they stop laying. I dread that this could happen to one of mine. Her wottles and comb have doubled in size lately but she still lays and hasn't crowed yet.

My speckledy did this a couple of years ago just for a day or 2. She's never done it since and still lays at 5 years old

My 'top hen' is very much louder than all the others....if she was disturbing people I might consider trying to lower her position in the pecking order. Possibly if I took her away and reintroduced a couple of days later that might happen? Just thinking out loud really, it could be worth a try!

Is it a true cock-a-doodle-dooooo or is it more of a BWARK, BWARK, BWARK (earsplittingly loud for approx 10 minutes at a time mostly mornings)??

I have a couple do that but only because they are grumps and hate it if their fave box is taken, than again when they get their fave box but someone has looked in while they are in their fave box, and then again when they've layed the blasted egg, and then again..............

It was a true cock-a-doodle-dooooo, sounded just like a cockerel but a wee bit quieter - just hope I (or the neighbours) don't hear it again!

Happy as long as she's quiet and laying eggs (whispers just in case she's listening )
