Hayley - sometimes i am on your doorstep as i go up to see my mother in Norfolk. She lives next door to my sister and between them they have a couple of acres that they let hens run around. I retired my first lot of ex-batts up there and just recently i took a job lot of silver sussex up there.

So maybe i can arrange a drop in!

As for the Dorset run, definatley on for second week in September as i am going back down to River Cottage HQ, so if you are within striking distance of Axminster......

Another update. Poor little Jellybean died today Very sudden, as is usual with ex-batts. the children are very sad but realise that they've done the best they can for her in letting her be a proper chicken for a month. As far as I know, Janet's still sitting tight and hasn't missed Jellybean yet

Not really, she was a bit like the one I lost last week, we think freedom was just a little bit too much to take on

They give them lots of antibiotics etc in these systems so their immune systems never develop properly and tehy get so "run down" I think sometimes they just can't cope with it

sorry to hear about Jellybean, I know all to well how quickly they can go too and hugs to your Daughter and her family.

Tell your daughter that this is just the final step in re-introducing ex-batts into the world of being proper chickens.......

I agree with RedThorn, allowing an ex-batt to sit on eggs is the ultimate step in giving her a full life. With any luck having eggs to brood will distract her from the loss of Jellybean too. Hope everything goes well, those eggs sound as if they're going to hatch into some lovely, and varied, chicks.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.
