  • Tail Feathers.....

    ....or the lack of.

Apart from the usual pecking order squabbling, we don't have much in the way of bullying problems......or so I thought.

I've noticed several dark tail feathers dotted about the chook's area over the past few weeks, but it's difficult to say who's they are. Now, though, it's become apparent that they are from Buffy, my Buff Sussex.

Buffy isn't at the bottom of the pecking order, she's first in line for food and will be quite mean to the other girls if there's a particular morsel she wants for herself. So why has she only got one tail feather left?

I've checked her parson's nose and there are no signs of injury or any redness. The chooks have plenty to interest them, cds, logs, dust baths, a big diggy area, a bark area and there's always a cabbage hanging up or some brocolli or corn on the cob in the afternoons.

Is this a bedtime squabble? The perches in my henhouse are the same height as my nestboxes and although the girls used to perch properly, they all started huddling into the nestboxes when we got Morag & Daisy. We've highered the perches and have been lifting the girls on to them every night, but they don't stay there very long. Buffy's butt now reeks of neat Eau de Gauloise in the form of Ukadex spray.

    Suggestions and advice gratefully received!

Ooo dunno!!! I expect you've checked for lice and mites but I'd treat them all anyway just in case. She might be pulling them out herself, but I haven't a clue why. Sorry
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

It won't be a bedtime squabble, but possibly early morning pecking while they are waiting to be let out. Keep an eye on her. As long as blood is not being drawn she should be ok. Is it possible to hang some greens/nettles inside the hen house so they have something to occupy them in the early morning?

I let them out at about 7am, but hanging greens inside is great idea.

During the day, I spend a lot of time watching them so it doesn't happen then. I really hope she's not into self-harm as I've no idea how to stop that one. They're checked weekly for lice etc, and all are very clean. I dust the henhouse cracks & crevices every week when it's dry after being cleaned out & scrubbed down. I've also put mite powder into their dustbath area when the weather's dry.

Tail pulling is a bad habit, and won't be caused by parasites (it sounds like you have that area covered anyway). It does sound like a hen house activity as she's not being pecked during the day. Hope the greens work!!
