  • At long last!!

One of my Bluebelles (age 24 weeks) has laid her first egg today about time too!! It's a lovely little pinky-brown one, and as it's possibly fertilised, I've given it a good shake and put it in the fridge ready for more of them to make a cake with. Wonder if it was the treats of lots of worms yesterday that pushed the final button?

Good girl! Lovely eggs. I can't imagine eating a pallid supermarket offering now - even a 'free range' egg.

Oh yes, Basil's been "doing his stuff" for weeks now. He got out the other week and had his way with at least one of the ex-batts. My friend took the eggs home that weekend, put them on the side in the kitchen and didn't use them all straight away. When he was making an omelette the other day, the 3rd egg he cracked into the bowl had an embryo in it! He said it stank to high heaven and made him feel ill for the rest of the day. No brekky omelette that day

The plan is that when I come back from holiday, 2 of the best ex-batts will move in with the Bluebelles and I'll incubate their eggs and see what sort of fertility rate, what the chicks (if any) look like. They should be lovely "back yard chooks" bred for egg-laying rather than table birds
