The attacking Faverolle has met his maker today. Why don't I feel good about it?
Went into run and picked him up without any commotion and carried him down the allotment path talking to him all the time. Hung him upside down by his feet and he didn't even try to attack me and just had a look of resignation on his face. Poor bugger even stretched out his neck as if to say "Come on then, let's get it over with!'

Probably not a good day to despatch him after finding one of my ISA's had been drowned.

He was born on 27th Feb 09 along with another five cockerels. (Just my luck hatch 7 eggs and 6 of them were cockerels)

Only three cockerels left now, a Light Sussex,a Faverolle and the Snadge. The Snadge hasn't crowed yet and if he doesn't he will survive..........if he does, I hope he gives me a while to get over culling the one I've culled today.

If I was destitute and needed the meat it wouldn't be so bad, but I'm not and don't.

Been on the wagon for nye on a couple of years now but must admit I nearly succumbed to a bottle of Cabernet this evening. Appologies..........if I appear to be rambling as if I'd downed that bottle.

Half of him is in the freezer the other half I will BBQ tomorrow!

I still wish I hadn't had to put an end to Shirty roo but there really was no other answer,

If you were the kind of man who took joy in killing a bird you've reared and cared for all its life you wouldn't be the kind of man who'd give the birds such a good life, or who seems to me to have so much respect from all the chookie grapes!

You don't have to feel good about it Snadger.
But there's no need to feel bad either.
You just did what had to be done.
The only difference between you and the rest of us is that we pay someone else to do it for us.
Forget the Cabernet. Enjoy your BBQ.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

look at the fact he did have a decent life.... you knew you'd have to cull him eventually. when you have the BBQ tomorrow have a laugh about him attacking you....for memories sake....

Forget the cabernet.... just do his sacrifice justice and cook him to the best of your abilities.

Snadger,we have three boys in the garden at home and possibly another two at the lottie...if I'm honest I'm still in a bit of denial about their future.....and then we've got a further eight eggs under Dandelion!
I really admire the fact that you've had the guts to learn & carry through the deed yourself...you were with them at the start, gave them a perfect life & then a totally dignified stress free end!
                It's a matter of fact that any of us that have been bitten by the hatching bug are going to have to come to terms with & for one I thankyou for sharing your experience!{{{xxx}}}

I couldn't do it. I wouldn't ask Hmself to do it for me. That's why we don't hatch our own chicks. Good for you for being able to do it so sensitively. I'm sure he'll taste marvellous.

Basil jumped at me yesterday!!!! One of the Welsummer girls had flown over the 6' fence into the ex-batts run and couldn't get back, so I had her tucked under my arm when I took her back. Basil wasn't pleased with either her or me, so I got a jump and she got a telling off Must admit it did startle me, but it was just a warning I think ......................... hope so anyway, don't want him going into the pot just yet
