Well, just returned from the beach to find 6 with the hen in the coop. The 7th I had rescued just before going out from the cat (again) and had put in a small cage for safety. So 7 out of 8 ok. Might be the 8th underneath but didn't want to disturb too much to check in case they all flew out again. Will know in the morning!

Doesn't sound too bad then. See your cat was helping and catching them for you!
Could I pester you for some updated pics?Last edited by RedThorn; 23-08-2009, 08:47 PM.Never test the depth of the water with both feet

That's a nice idea. Just watch your cat as it seems to like playing fetchNever test the depth of the water with both feet

Yes thank you, they did. Having counted 6 under her last night + the one I rescued, when I let them out all 8 appeared, so the 8th must have been under her last night. The coop is now moved to a flatter area which (hopefully) they can't wiggle out from under. I have had to shut the cats in however as they are spending a lot of time sitting around outside the coop and driving hen and chicks crazy!!
Why is it I don't worry about my other chicks in quite the same way, but have been fretting about these little souls.

No actually the hen was not too fussed. She still had one chick with her which never left her so that seemed to satisfy her. I let her out of the coop so she could range around and be accessible for the chicks and I think she was more interested in being free! I left the coop door open and she returned of her own accord at dusk.
The instinct of partridges is that when disturbed they scatter, and then regroup later when all is quiet, which is obviously what they did. (Normal "chicken" chicks run together as a bunch). I was concerned though that being so little they would get taken by predators before they made it back to the hen. Fortunately though, despite the attempts made by our cats, this was not the case.

Sad to report one of the chicks died earlier this evening - discovered puncture wound underneath wing, presumably inflicted by the cat. It had been off colour for most of the day and I suspected it would die, but rather hoping it was just stress and would pull through, but not to be the case. Still we are lucky to have the remaining 7 safe and sound.
